Study claiming new coronavirus can be transmitted by people without symptoms was flawed |
2020-05-04 |
[ScienceMag] A paper published on 30 January in The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) about the first four people in Germany infected with a novel coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)![]() made many headlines because it seemed to confirm what public health experts feared: that someone who has no symptoms from infection with the virus, named 2019-nCoV, can still transmit it to others. That might make controlling the virus much harder. Chinese researchers had previously suggested asymptomatic people might transmit the virus but had not presented clear-cut evidence. "There’s no doubt after reading [the NEJM] paper that asymptomatic transmission is occurring," Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told journalists. "This study lays the question to rest." |

#5 So typical. Push out the sensationalist rubbish. And gee whiz, Fauci was all over that. What a surprise. |

#3 The study may be flawed, but every pathogen has asymptomatic carriers. |

#2 So there was a rush to publish a sensational claim that made the virus seem much more dangerous, and that message resonated so well with media and experts that they published it in a respectable? medical journal without any effort to find out if it was true. And that article, that bit of fake science, rapidly spread around the world, and continues to spread panic and economic disruption around the world. Well done! |

#1 We should have gotten a clue when most of the people on that cruise ship did NOT get sick. Of course this study will probably get reversed by another one tomorrow... |
