Newsom goes Full Whitmer - chastises beachgoers, warning that defying order could delay reopening California
2020-04-28
DO WHAT I SAY! *stamps tiny feet, shakes tiny fists*
[SD UT] Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday criticized Californians who defied the statewide stay-at-home order and flocked to beaches this past weekend, saying that ignoring restrictions could prolong the spread of the coronavirus in the state.

Newsom's comments come after thousands of beachgoers descended on the coast in Orange and Ventura counties despite his pleas last week to avoid the temptation of doing so during the warm weekend.

"This virus doesn't take the weekends off," Newsom said during his daily COVID-19 briefing in Sacramento. "The only thing that will set us back is people stopping to practice physical distancing and appropriate social distancing. That's the only thing that's going to slow down our ability to reopen this economy."

Newsom vowed to increase statewide enforcement of the stay-at-home order if necessary and, in a thinly veiled criticism of the cities and counties that saw crowded beaches, said "we'll have a little work to do to improve upon Saturday."

"You didn't see those images at L.A. beaches and San Diego beaches and [in] Northern California ... because we had strong guidelines that were not only adopted but were abided by, and we had local partners that supported those efforts," Newsom said.

Uhhh.... all of it? 7 Congressional districts are in or touch OC. All 7 are Donks. That happened in 2016. Are there places where a Repup could win? Sure but looks to me demographics are destiny in this case.

#14  California is lucky in that they already know tourists aren't interested in California's shit-deep cities but the tourism to beaches and mountains should mostly return to normal.

NY is in deep as tourists are unlikely to return for a long time.

#13  The people in Michigan and California must feel a little like the crew of the U.S.S. Caine under Captain Queeg.

Captain Queeg: Ahh, but the strawberries! That's - that's where I had them. They laughed at me and made jokes, but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt and with - geometric logic - that a duplicate key to the wardroom icebox DID exist! And I'd have PRODUCED that key if they hadn't've pulled the Caine out of action! I, I, I know now they were only trying to protect some fellow officers -

Umm... naturally, I can only cover these things roughly, from - memory... but if I've left anything out... why, you just ask me - specific questions and I'll be - perfectly happy to answer them... one by one.

Actually, if you look at the numbers, it does. Or maybe it's just sloppy record-keeping.

I do like how "full Whitmer" is now a thing. Wolverines!

#8  CA municipalities are moving ahead on their own for phased reopening. These will be small steps but the hope is that it builds pressure on State gummint to follow. Otherwise, it's gonna take a whole lot of civil disobedience to get things going.

#6  Correction to above: the ER is local to me -- that's where his dad lives -- but my friend lives >100 miles away.

#5  This good has almost certainly caused more deaths from foregone cancer surgeries and other urgent care that's been denied by CA hospitals during this panic. That's not hyperbole. Surgeon friend just told me he had to drive to a local ER and force them to treat his aged father's abdominal pain he'd been suffering for three days -- they're not permitted to do so because the Boy Governor's ridiculously stringent orders. Turns out he has cancer, so they finally -- after my friend's driving over a hundred miles to confront them face to face and force them to admit his dad and diagnose and treat his symptoms - they finally perform the operation that saves his father's life.

Usually the opposite happens and the patient needing cancer surgery is denied treatment because ... COVID. How many times is this being repeated across the country?

#3  "This virus doesn't take the weekends off,"

There are tens of thousands of state government who've had quite a few weekends off, not to mention the past six weeks, all whilst collecting full pay and benefits. That's in the face of a sharp decline in sales tax revenue and gas tax revenue, just to name the two obvious ones. How many people do yo think this will cause to run for the exits of CA once this lockdown shit is over, well, more than were already planned?

Face it, Sir Gavin The Gay - your state is financially fucked for the forseeable future. Continuing the lockdown another day / week or whatever will only make things that much worse. Great leadership, there (/sarc).
