Trump says U.S. has 'shut down' coronavirus threat; China shuns U.S. help
2020-02-04
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States has taken decisive action to protect Americans from the threat of a fast-moving coronavirus while offering help to China, President Donald Trump said on Sunday, but a key adviser said Beijing had not accepted the offers of assistance.

Trump appeared to downplay concerns about the impact in the United States of the flu-like virus that has killed 350 people in China and spread to more than two dozen countries, telling Fox television in an interview, "We’re gonna see what happens, but we did shut it down, yes."

Concerns about the virus spurred the United States to declare a public health emergency and bar entry to foreign nationals who have recently visited China.

Under new restrictions here that went into effect at 5 p.m. ET Sunday, U.S. citizens who have traveled in China within 14 days will be directed to one of eight airports designated for screening, with three more to be added Monday.

"We can’t have thousands of people coming in who may have this problem - the coronavirus," Trump told Fox during a short interview broadcast on Sunday. He said U.S. officials had offered China "tremendous help" in dealing with the epidemic.

#10  Thank you for your continuing reports from the front, Beau. Here’s hoping China succeeds in breaking the transmission of this thing now.

Yes it seems so, but mild symptoms that look like a common cold will do.

And who hasn't a common cold in February?

#8  There is nobody to transmit the disease in China anymore. On my daily trek to the local convenience store for booze and cigarettes in a city of 30,000,000, there was not one civilian on the street. Well, one might have been a civilian but she looked a little sketchy ... I don't think she was civilian.

#6  #2 EC I thought the German study showing symptom-less transmission had been withdrawn. When the researchers went back and asked if the carrier had had any symptoms, they self-reported the entire list of coronavirus symptoms.

Inscrutable indeed.

#5  We were looking to repurchase a clinic's several Ozone outlet air cleaners last night. The one system that actually kills airborne bacteria and viruses on the fly. "Product unavailable".

Not surprised.

#3  shut down for now perhaps

as Euro Conserv says it will be more difficult going forward

the US has a lot of population centers with compromised immune systems, e.g., nursing homes, homeless shelters, etc. and while the fatality rate seems to be below 2% in the general population, the rate is probably more like 20% in vulnerable groups

#2  "We did shut it down, yes"

Bold words if you ask me. I'm actually surprised that the West has only a few reported cases yet. China seems to apply radical measures now but these only go that far.

Once you have millions infected in China, border controls will no longer solve the problem given the fact that you can carry the virus symptom-free.

#1  No assistance needed? Completely understand. As time permits, lettuce know how you are doing.
