Cheerleading coach accused of sexually assaulting student in front of his own child
2020-01-14
[NYPOST] A cheerleading and gymnastics coach in San Antonio was busted for allegedly sexually assaulting a teen student ‐ including once in front of his own child, according to reports.

Robert Thomas Kotara, 33, was arrested Friday and is facing charges of sexual assault of a minor, the San Antonio Express-News reports.

The alleged victim, now 18, told police Kotara first sexually assaulted her when she was 16 and the attacks then became a "regular occurrence," according to an arrest affidavit obtained by the outlet.

During one alleged incident, she told Sherlocks Kotara asked her to babysit for his child while he went to work. But instead of leaving, the teen said the coach sexually assaulted her while the child played nearby in the same room, the Express-News reports.

On another occasion, she alleged Kotara asked her to run an errand with him then took her to a hotel and plied her with alcohol, according to the outlet.

Another coach at Kotara’s gym told police he saw the victim sitting naked on the coach’s lap in his office, and later showed detectives text messages from July 2018 where he confronted Kotara.

Kotara later claimed he wasn’t wearing shorts at the time because it was hot in his office, WOAI reports.

The teen ultimately tried to distance herself from Kotara by changing her phone number, but the coach allegedly continued to contact her on a daily basis through email, according to the News-Express.

The gym he owns, which was not named in court docs, had been closed as of Friday, KENS reports.

Kotara is also facing theft and burglary charges for allegedly breaking into a gym and stealing two fans before trying to sell them to another business, the station reports.
