#66 Twitter = bullshit. No serious person pays attention to Twitter. Trump uses Twitter to f--- with his enemies. Period. His tweets have zero to do with realities on the ground - or in the air. |

#65 Trump's bluster is designed to create & spread fear uncertainty & doubt. He's f---ing with his enemies' minds. Поняла? |
Posted by: Lex 2020-01-07 22:41 |
#64 If there is de-escalation Trump will have done tremendous damage with his empty bluster. In that case he really should have taken the opportunity to remain silent. |

#63 #57 I'm sort of disappointed with all the "internet tuff guys" on this thread. I expected more thoughtful replies. I think this may be over - thankfully. Iran took some pot shots to save face and are scared- and we know it. Lets hope things de-escalate from here. No one wants war here, Sam. The question is whether they, as s.o. above reported, killed 20 of our people. If yes, we strike back - 10x harder. If no, we ignore their BS and de-escalate. |
Posted by: Lex 2020-01-07 22:27 |
#62 "They attacked us, & we hit back. If they attack again, which I would strongly advise them not to do, we will hit them harder than they have ever been hit before!" The Taliban bet on Bush's threats not being serious. They won their bet and survived. The Mullahs are betting on Trump's threats not being serious. If the Mullahs win their bet what conclusions will Kim draw? |

#61 Saddam's people would do the same thing back in 1999-2000 to jets patrolling the Northern-Southern No fly zones. They'd jump out of the bunker and fire off a few AAA rounds after the patrol aircraft had already departed the AO. Looked good on paper. |

#60 "I think this may be over - thankfully. Iran took some pot shots to save face and are scared- and we know it. Lets hope things deescalate from here." So back to mortars and bombs against USA forces? |

#59 Some of us heard / read '20 US servicemen dead' at first, so could you back off just a bit? Thanks. |

#58 "internet tuff guys" On or off the web. These folks are just that Sammy. |

#56 Donald J. Trump@realDonaldTrump 3m All is well! Missiles launched from Iran at two military bases located in Iraq. Assessment of casualties & damages taking place now. So far, so good! We have the most powerful and well equipped military anywhere in the world, by far! I will be making a statement tomorrow morning. |

#55 Dem prexidential candidates calling for prayers now. Hypocritical bastids always belittle people calling for prayers after a mass shooting... |
Posted by: M. Murcek 2020-01-07 21:36 |
#54 Is it possible that Iran planned not to actually hit anybody? That way they get to avoid all out war but can crow that they fought back against the Americans. They’ve already said that they won’t do anything else if we don’t respond. As much as I’d love to whip their asses, escalation gets risky. We already smoked their top guys. Deterrence established. We won and they know it. |

#53 Fred’s been updating his post — it looks like Iran is as good at hitting empty fields as Hamas. |
Posted by: trailing wife 2020-01-07 21:32 |
#52 Iran launched on Iraq. A nuanced response could be Trump asking Iraq - sorry about that damage. Would you like any assistance in your response? That way the response is in line with Iraq's request - not us going it alone. And frankly - they OUGHT to be pissed off at the Iranian's shooting at them. They fought a long war about that relatively recently. |

#51 Certainly would be a shame if suddenly all the bank accounts in Iraq read zero - or some other random number. That'd crash their economy tout suite and no idea what random group of hackers did that ... |

#50 No mullahs, no threat |

#49 Target the mullahs, not the people. Do what's necessary to neutralize the Iran threat to the West. |
Posted by: Elmerert Hupens2660 2020-01-07 21:05 |
#48 They will have to hit the ADA sites and C&C sites first. Then they should hit the missile sites to defend the troops. All pretty standard. I would like to see them obliterate the Special forces bases. Turn them into glazed sand and then let that sink in with the rest of the military. The republican guard rank and file will not stay and fight. Also, any Iranian boat in the straights need to be gone. As far as the nuke sites go, we can send a god rod in on those and remove them without hurting the population. Just my recommendation.. |

#44 Chance should not be lost. |
Posted by: Spanky Whuter1088 2020-01-07 20:28 |
#43 If no casualties we could let it slide and ask the Iraqis how they want to handle it. |
Posted by: gorb 2020-01-07 20:26 |
#42 Ayatollahs will hide in a culturally sensitive mosque and it'll be a war crime if we bomb them. But then, war is a crime. |

#40 I won't quibble with that, bbrewer; works for me. |

#39 Yes, it's started. Maybe, finally, after 40 years of kicking the can down the road, we're at last going to rid ourselves of this menace. I hope. |
Posted by: Dave D. 2020-01-07 20:14 |
#38 #1: Air defense radar sites #2: Missile launch sites #3: IRGC facilities and personnel #4: Nuclear sites #5: National command structure, incl. the mullahs I'd take out the head of the snake third imo |

#37 It just started. |

#36 "JASSM-ER from the air, TLAM from the subs." Yes, i hope the USN his finally smart enough to do proper diligence. |

#35 "Hearing that there are no casualties via Tucker." I don't believe there are no causalities. |
Posted by: Spanky Whuter1088 2020-01-07 20:07 |
#34 Only an idiot would fly above a nuke site full of AAA in B-52. JASSM-ER from the air, TLAM from the subs. |
Posted by: M. Murcek 2020-01-07 20:07 |
#33 I'm sure they are moving civilians to surround the missile launchers as we speak. They love human shields and Herb will support them |

#32 Hearing that there are no casualties via Tucker. |
Posted by: Jan 2020-01-07 20:04 |
#31 B-52 with missiles or very long range bombs, Only an idiot would fly above a nuke site full of AAA in B-52. There isn't much to tell about ballistic missiles from Katyushas to 2500km range ones. |
Posted by: Spanky Whuter1088 2020-01-07 20:03 |
#30 I suspect #27 would be pretty accurate. |
Posted by: Besoeker 2020-01-07 20:03 |
#29 Did Trump say "52 targets" or "B-52 targets?" |
Posted by: Glenmore 2020-01-07 20:02 |
#28 it was a Twitter capture and I can't find it again Links if you have ‘em, guys — just paste in the comment box below your comment if you don’t know how to bury them in a link. Comment either here or in Fred’s post — he did a twitter round up here. Raj keeps the headline though, because he was first. :-) |

#27 My thoughts on targeting, in priority order: #1: Air defense radar sites #2: Missile launch sites #3: IRGC facilities and personnel #4: Nuclear sites #5: National command structure, incl. the mullahs I suspect the next few days will get very, very interesting and lively. The mullahs have clearly descended into Thrash Mode just like our resident idiots, the Democrats. Trump certainly has a talent for driving stupid people to do stupid things, doesn't he? |
Posted by: Dave D. 2020-01-07 20:00 |
#26 Civie here with two questions 1) describe these ballistic missiles, their capabilities, etc. 2) what's this "strategy" we must have now, this minute and when asked, which they themselves can't answer. I like Reagan's strategy "They lose, we win." Thanks Rantburg U. |
Posted by: Sherry 2020-01-07 19:59 |
#25 The nuke sites should be one the targets. My completely uninformed opinion - that's what the B-52's are all about. |
Posted by: Raj 2020-01-07 19:59 |
#24 Chris #8 - it was a Twitter capture and I can't find it again. |

#23 The nuke sites should be one the targets. |
Posted by: Spanky Whuter1088 2020-01-07 19:51 |
#22 Target the mullahs, not the people. They don't want that war. Agreed, and I think we (our mil.) have considered that very well. |
Posted by: Raj 2020-01-07 19:48 |
#21 I think the first thing we hit is Iran's missile sites. This is because Iran probably has dozens or more likely hundreds of launchables and it would be good to reduce this number. Unfortunately, the staffing of these bases is mostly regular soldiers not IRNG. Everything else should |
Posted by: lord garth 2020-01-07 19:48 |
#20 The Telegraph is liveblogging events here, started almost an hour ago.
There’s a nice map showing Iran and its proxies around the Middle East, giving the approximate number of fighters for each named group. |

#19 Thanks lord garth |
Posted by: Spanky Whuter1088 2020-01-07 19:41 |
#18 one report was from Erbil - 3 or 4 missiles targeted the base, several shot down, several just missed the base |
Posted by: lord garth 2020-01-07 19:39 |
#17 Bear in mind that most Iranians would actually prefer to get rid of the mullahs and are actually quite friendly towards Americans. Target the mullahs, not the people. They don't want that war. |

#15 Just checking in before starting articles for tomorrow and I saw this. Thank you for posting it for us, Raj. Ladies and gentlemen of Rantburg, let’s keep all updates in this thread — we’ll start fresh with a new article at the midnight rollover that contains all your updates. I’ve set this as today’s new headline, replacing what was there before — Fred’s latest update allows us to do that (thanks, Fred!). 3dc earlier sent me a link to a tweet tracking the large number of West-East American military flights in the last few days — C-somethings? Diego Garcia isn’t the only site ready to rumble, I think. May God grant us victory speedily enough that we don’t have to break the enemy too badly. |

#10 Pick 4 Iranian cities. Do the Dresden thing. Moab the ayatollah. Oh and sink anything with an iranian flag. Good start. Maybe napalm the Iranian Embassy in New York. |

#9 ballistic missiles have been fired from inside Iran at multiple U.S. military facilities inside Iraq. That's interesting. No deniability there. I would have expected action from one of their proxies. |
