Iranian oil tanker 'is hit by two MISSILES' in 'terrorist' attack off of Saudi Arabia that caused explosion and heavy damage
2019-10-11
[MAIL] An Iranian oil tanker has been hit by two explosions off the coast of Saudi Arabia.

The National Iran Oil Company said a supertanker called Sabiti was struck by two missiles around 60 miles from the port of Jeddah on Friday morning.

The explosions badly damaged two tanks on board the vessel, causing it to leak into the Red Sea.

'Experts believe it was a terrorist attack,' a source told Iranian news agency ISNA.

The Nour news agency, which is close to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, said the crew was safe and had stopped the leak.

The state-owned National Iranian Tanker Company said that contrary to reports, 'there is no fire aboard the ship and the ship is completely stable'.

Tensions have been high between regional foes Iran and Saudi Arabia since an attack on the Kingdom's two oil facilities on September 14 that caused fires and damage and shutting down 5.7 million barrels per day (bpd) of production - more than 5 per cent of global oil supply.

#12  Tankers are big. Really, really big. If it was empty, it has a ton of buoyancy. Even if it was full, just punching a couple of holes in the side won't sink it.

Go figure, antiship missiles designed to sink 5,000 ton frigates don't work well on 600,000 ton supertankers.

#11  They must have been really, really, really small missiles.

I was wondering about that. Maybe some of those cute little Russian anti-tank missiles instead of an honest-to-gosh anti-ship missile.

#10  Interesting...

But without corroboration, how certain are we that this was a genuine attack and not a false-flag operation?

Images released by Iran’s Petroleum Ministry appeared to show no damage to the Sabiti visible from its bridge, though they did not show the ship’s sides. Satellite images of the area showed no visible smoke.

The ministry’s SHANA news agency said no ship nor any authority in the area responded to its distress messages.

They must have been really, really, really small missiles.
