Professor Slams Extinction Rebellion as a "Carnival for Middle Classes Who Love to Dress up as Activists"
2019-10-09
h/t Gates of Vienna
Professor and sociologist Frank Furedi has slammed the Extinction Rebellion climate change protest as "a carnival for middle classes who love to dress up as activists."

The group has embarked on a 2 week campaign to bring 60 major world cities to a standstill.

In an op-ed, Furedi describes the demonstration as "tens of thousands of adults playing at being children are not so much protesting but putting on a performance of protest."

#5  I met a tiresome 'Extinction Rebel', otherwise a college lecturer, and proceeded to feed his ego for a while. He was all laughs over 'How we absolutely brought the city to a standstill' and 'Oh, the cops had to beg us ! The Mayor himself came down to talk to us' and so on.

I understand what the author means.

#4  Buying organic is also conspicuous consumption -- a declaration you can afford crap grown with mysticism and pseudo-science over the just as nutritious regular produce.

See also the people who DON'T have Celiac's while avoiding gluten. Mostly they don't know what gluten is, they just make a show out of being special.

#2  Hell, P2K, when you make victimhood a commodity for government money, it's what you get.

But yeah, this is the same dynamic that has suburban mommies buying organic everything at Whole Foods and attributing it to promoting "health" when all they really want is to virtue signal and pretend to themselves they are going to live forever.

#1  Victimhood for the white privileged class. When you make victimhood a commodity in the status game, this is what you get.
