Thai court approves detention of suspected militant
2019-10-08
[Bangkok Post] A Thai court on Friday approved the Department of Special Investigation's (DSI) request to further detain for questioning a suspected militant who was arrested on Thursday after 14 years in hiding.

Mahamarormuelee Samae, a resident of Yala province, was taken into custody by the DSI in Pattani's Nong Chik district, where he was interviewed about bomb and gun attacks in Pattani's Khok Pho district last month. The 56-year-old suspect was accused of conspiring with others in recruiting people for the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) and wanted by the DSI for his alleged involvement in insurgency activities between 1993-2004.

Mr Mahamarormuelee is also accused of being involved in the Sept 16 attacks on a teacher protection unit in Khok Pho district in which two people were killed and four others injured. It is alleged that he procured mobile phones and SIM cards for the attackers. Police found one of the SIM cards at the scene and traced it to Mr Mahamarormuelee, a religious teacher at a school in Satun.

On Friday, the Criminal Court approved his detention for 12 days, from Oct 4-15.
