At the Rugby World Cup, It's Japan vs. the Hardest Drinking Fans in Sports
2019-09-24
[WSJ] The host nation is preparing for a beer shortage as the world's powerhouses of drinking gather to cheer for their favorite teams

Japan had known for a decade that it would host this year's Rugby World Cup. But only in the final months before kickoff did the city of Kobe grasp what it was in for. Some 36,000 fans from Ireland, England, Scotland and South Africa were on their way. And‐these being rugby fans‐they would be dangerously thirsty.

The Kobe tourist board needed to get the word out. At a seminar in May, it told restaurants, bars, and hotel operators to brace themselves for a run on all liquids hoppy, malty and cold. As it wrote on one fact sheet: "The world's powerhouses of beer drinking to gather in Kobe?!"

#4  IIRC, the Germans require the foam and it has to be to the top of the mug. I guess they need it for the belch and fart contests? Or possibly the foam mustache exhibitions ?

#3  By the way, the pic, that's how (1/3 foam) they usually serve beer?

#2  My favorite moment going to a Japanese baseball game was our host buying us a can of beer off a street vendor on the walk up to the stadium... beer was only half done when we made the gate. Two teenage attendants flagged us on the way in and I’m figuring it’s time to pitch the beer. They walk us over to a table, pull out plastic cups and carefully pour our beers into them for us to take into the game!
That ain’t how they roll at Wrigley Field.

#1  Don't forget the Russians are also there. Did they stock up on the Vodka? And Australians are known to down a few pints from time to time.
