Pippi Thunberg wins Amnesty’s highest human rights award
2019-09-19
[DAWN] Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg and the Fridays for Future youth movement received Amnesty International’s “Ambassadors of Conscience” award on Monday for their work highlighting the need for urgent action to avert climate disaster.

The 16-year-old, who is taking a year out of high school, received a standing ovation from students at The George Washington University in the US capital where the ceremony was held.

“The politics required to take on this crisis simply doesn’t exist today,” Thunberg said, standing on a step to reach the microphone.

“That is why every single one of us must push from every possible angle to hold those responsible accountable and to make the people in power act.”

She added that the prize was not just for her but the millions of youth who have taken part since last year in weekly school strikes held every Friday, inspired by the sit-in she began outside Sweden’s parliament in August 2018.

#14  At least daughter of Efraim makes some sense :)

Pippi Longstocking was exactly what I thought seeing her photo for the first time, and with a production like that it is impossible to think that there isn't an image consultant involved, especially considering her father's career and pedigree. I guess Princess Leia hair would be a bit too on the nose.

And perhaps a bit cynical on my part, a name like George Washington Bush is to initiate a certain emotional response.

#13  It could be both actually.

But Greta is no Pippilotta Viktualia Rullgardina Krusmynta Efraimsdotter LÃ¥ngstrump, who was an extremely smart kid :-)

#12  Thank you EC, though it seems a stretch..so is thinking it is a reference to a comic book character.

My money is one more than one Tony Stark (surname)s out there though.

#11  Since Geta is the daughter of an actress the name might not (directly) refer to the comic magazine but rather to the name of the Swedish actress Anna Catharina Tintin Anderzon.

#10  Plus comme Milou que Tintin, je pense

Only time I'd heard Tintin as a name was in The Crow - missed the Spielburg movie I guess. I wouldn't expect anyone outside my area to know who Hank the Cowdog is, though a scotch drinking dog is intriguing.

I am reminded of a conversation I had with a Chicago area teacher who went through her orbit went a sister and brother named respectively, Tequila and Salt, named I guessed for something the parents found important in their lives...

#7  I guess, if the information I came across is accurate, one of her middle names, and she has like five names, is Tintin.

Meant nothing to me, but I guess Europeans would know about this comic adventure series character? If someone more worldly than I could help, is this a common enough name that it could just be coincidence, or did her parents likely do that on purpose?

#6  Yale's a lock. They need to backfill the Screaming Brat, Jeralyn Luther.

#5  Based on the laugh-out-loud-funny "Amnesty's Highest Human Rights Award", I was gonna go with Bee.

Given that Amnesia International normally has nothing to do with the weather, I take this as yet another example of Blair's Law - all the world's multiple idiocies uniting to become one giant useless force.

#4  Just when you need a snowflake to get triggered about Europeans sailing across the Atlantic to tell the natives what to do...

Yet being sold as some kind of skald. Still, more qualified for Yale than Hogg.
