#8  The newest Japanese Soryu class submarines use a next-gen AIP system. They've replaced the Lox/Stirling engine setup with a ginormous rechargeable lithium battery.

I'd like to see them sell a few to Taiwan and Vietnam.

#6  The Japanese Navy has subs that use a fuel/air/electric system that lets them stay under for days at a time and are quieter than nuclear subs.
Also the Japanese have used their armed forces as a labor pool and an excuse to keep their armament production up to date. They have "improved" copies of a lot of weapons. Their rifles and anti-tank weapons are nasty and so are their tanks. They have been training with the US Marines for some time now on how take islands.

#5  I know they don't have an infinite budget, but I'd suggest they build something new for the F-35 and continue to use these for anti-submarine work, because they'll need it.

#4  Only two in the class, Izumo and Kaga. Now if they just add Akagi, Soryu, and Hiryu, this could become interesting.

#3  Glad Japan is shedding the old WW2 restrictions. They were needed at the time, but Japan has evolved into a mature nation and is ready to once again step out on the world stage.

#2  Maritime self defense continues to evolve. When will Japan drop the last veil?

#1  Don't think for a minute this 'conversion' was designed into them. The Japanese SDF Navy knew exactly what it was building:p
