UK's Johnson wins Queen's approval to suspend Parliament ahead of Brexit |
2019-08-29 |
[DAWN] British Prime Minister Boris Johnson![]() maneuvered on Wednesday to give his political opponents even less time to block a no-deal Brexit before the October 31 withdrawal deadline, winning Queen Elizabeth II's approval to suspend Parliament. His critics were outraged. Though Johnson previously had refused to rule out such a move, the timing of the decision took politicians many of whom are on vacation by surprise. Lawmakers reacted with fury, including John Bercow, speaker of the lower House of Commons, who was not told in advance of Johnson's plan. "Shutting down Parliament would be an offense against the democratic process and the rights of parliamentarians as the people's elected representatives," Bercow said. "Surely at this early stage in his premiership, the prime minister should be seeking to establish rather than undermine his democratic credentials and indeed his commitment to Parliamentary democracy." #21 The Kingdom of Arthur didn't include Scotland. But Arthur was indeed a Celt i.e. a Romanised (sp) Briton, and he fought against those Germanic invaders, the Saxons, across the western part of the island. |

#20 The Kingdom of Arthur didn't include Scotland. Someone remind me, is having Scotland a good thing? Seems last I looked, it was a bit spongy in term of soaking up money. I suppose one could always acquire it if necessary by any of the usual means. |

"Surely at this early stage in his premiership, the prime minister should be seeking to establish rather than undermine his democratic credentials and indeed his commitment to Parliamentary democracy." You wanna talk about democracy? How about that election you guys had and the way you parliamentarians have done everything you could to thwart the will of the people ever since then? |

#15 Not likely. The Kingdom of Arthur didn't include Scotland. |

#14 Boris should just pull that sword from the stone and become the rightful King of the Britons. The Queen will be OK with this because it takes her idiot son, Charles, off the board and she can finally retire in peace to raise corgis. |

#13 The Liberal Democrats seem to fill the gap in the center now. |

#12 had Labour dumped Corbyn months ago. When he was tapped to lead, he was an outsider. But it’s become his party now — like our Democratic Party, those in the center-left have been silenced and driven out. See, fir example: UK Labour members ‘radicalized’ on Israel since Corbyn’s election, report claims Study of social media posts and online forums finds members have become ‘obsessive’ about Jewish state; disputes view anti-Semitism only exists among small number of new arrivals |

#11 This could backfire in a big way if an irate Parliament gets its act together and passes resolutions in early September Boris won't like. All this wouldn't have happened had Labour dumped Corbyn months ago. |

#9 Well the Commies and Muslims in Parliament and in the EU have been showing quite a bit of disrespect toward the Queen. Surprise! |

#5 In this game of chess, the Queen makes her move. And while a majority of Brits hope she lives forever, her chilluns and grand chilluns are like the Murdoch boys, ready to go 180 degrees the other way as soon as one of them is in charge... |

#3 I thought I read this is about as unusual as sunrise, as it's vacation season in the UK and most of the MPs are away anyway. |

#2 Yes, the "repeat the process until the proles get the right (desired by the elites) answer" is reminiscent of the last few seconds of a certain bassetbaw game... |

#1 "would be an offense against the democratic process and the rights of parliamentarians" The democratic process already happened. He's just outraged he can't thwart it. |
