[DAWN] At least two persons were killed and one young boy was maimed in two sectors of Azad Jammu and Kashmir ...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there.... (AJK) in "unprovoked" Indian firing on Sunday, officials said. The deaths occurred in Battal sector in Poonch district while the boy was maimed in Abbaspur sector of the same district which has been facing cross Line of Control (LoC) shelling for the past several days. "Today the shelling began at 6:30pm and continued for two hours without any pause. However, we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by... it is intermittent at the moment," a police official based in Battal told Dawn at 10pm, but declined to be identified. He said one of the shells landed close to the venue of the wedding of one, Muhammad Aqeel, son of Muhammad Siddique Bhatti in Darra Sher Khan village. Splinters of a shell pierced the groom’s 60-year-old uncle, Hassan Din aka Balochi, who had come all the way from Dadyal tehsil of Mirpur district to attend the ceremony. Apart from him, 63-year-old Lal Din, son of Muhammad Din, a resident of Darra Sher Khan village, was also hit by the splinters. Both went titzup, the official said. In Abbaspur sector of Poonch district, Saddam Noor, a seven-year-old boy, was critically injured after he an Indian sniper hit him in the head from across the nearby LoC. The boy was rushed to CMH Rawalakot at death's door, an official said. "Heavy firing is going on and its thunder is making all the residents restless," said local journalist Saira Yousuf Chughtai at 10:40pm Related: Kashmir: 2019-08-17 India could change No First Use Nuclear Policy - Defence Minister Kashmir: 2019-08-17 WaPo: Kashmir crisis isn’t about territory It’s about a Hindu victory over Islam Kashmir: 2019-08-17 Crackdown launched on sale of Indian films Related: Poonch district: 2019-08-16 3 Pakistan Army soldiers martyred in LoC firing by Indian forces Poonch district: 2019-06-18 Soldier was injured in cross Line of Control (LoC) firing in Poonch district Poonch district: 2019-05-23 Bid to revive militancy in Rajouri; 4 AK rifles, 11 pistols seized Related: Line of Control: 2019-08-16 3 Pakistan Army soldiers martyred in LoC firing by Indian forces Line of Control: 2019-08-14 'Time needed to restore order in Kashmir,' says Indian apex court as govt claims easing restrictions in phases Line of Control: 2019-08-13 Qureshi, Bilawal spend Eidul Azha in AJK to show solidarity with Kashmiri people |
