Airlines Worldwide React to the U.S. Ban on Iranian Airspace
2019-06-22
[Fortune] Early Friday morning, the Federal Aviation Administration banned all U.S.-registered aircraft from flying over Iranian airspace, and airlines worldwide are following the guidance.

The FAA warned of a "potential for miscalculation or misidentification" in the region after an Iranian surface-to-air missile on Thursday brought down an unmanned U.S. drone with a wingspan larger than a Boeing 737 jetliner.

Iran said the drone "violated" its territorial airspace, while the U.S. called the missile fire "an unprovoked attack" in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf.

There are "heightened military activities and increased political tensions in the region, which present an inadvertent risk to U.S. civil aviation operations and potential for miscalculation or misidentification," the FAA said.

The Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman are crucial areas for international air travel, and many global airlines are following the U.S. safety advice.

Lufthansa, Germany’s largest airline, said it had been avoiding the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman since Thursday, but that it would continue to operate its flights to Tehran.

Dutch carrier KLM also said it would avoid the strait, calling the move a "precautionary measure," according to the Associated Press.

#16  When they rack up their shit,
There's a guy with a chit:
"Yo, sign here," and who knows where the ham goes
In Uncle Sam's navy,
And much less the gravy...
"Oh! Floats, pretty horses, and flambeaus!"

#15  180 million dollars drone doesn't have any defensive capabilities

It must be like rappers and Lambos
But just a bit bigger, with ambos:
Disposable toys
That don't make as much noise
As they spy on bad boys' Bones and Tambos.

#14  The operational question, IMHO, is why it doesn't fly with some air-defense pals - purpose-built drones that are fast, maneuverable and highly lethal to flying things.

Because they don’t exist yet.

#12  I'm not sure it counts as a violation of air space when you are in the middle of a war.

A little background on the MQ-4 Triton recon drone. Basically the long form of what M. Murcek said in #9

#11  Yeah, we're SO evil, troll

#10  Hey, does the US have a track record of violating other countries airspace with its recce aircraft? Asking for a friend.

MiG alley was over North Korea and which country?

#9  It was built mostly to do what PBYs dis during WW II - fly long missions to spot enemy warships at sea. Of course, now it can have sensors that allow for other activities as well. The fact that it is designed to work with P-8s speaks to its primary mission.

#8  180 million dollars is a lot to spend on what is basically a remote controlled airplane with a camera.

It's a purpose-built device - slow, steady, with an expensive as heck suite of cameras and sensors. The operational question, IMHO, is why it doesn't fly with some air-defense pals - purpose-built drones that are fast, maneuverable and highly lethal to flying things.

#7  #6 yes, it seems so careless. International airspace in the Strait of Hormuz is no safe zone. I would hope or assume a manned craft would have some added security assistance. They would love a hostage situation. Imagine that if Obama were still in. Carter number two. October surprise perhaps developing.

#6  What I don't understand is how a 180 million dollars drone doesn't have any defensive capabilities.

180 million dollars is a lot to spend on what is basically a remote controlled airplane with a camera.

#5  Also, there is the fact that the Democrats are the biggest pack of cowards who never once suggested standing up to anybody who wasn't out for America's best interests in the past 50-odd years.

#4  The Dems don't realize several things.

1) The "FOS" (fly over states) don't want a war.
2) The FOS understand nuanced explanations about proportionality and can figure out what they mean by who said them.
3) The FOS know an election trick when they smell one.

So, calling Trump a coward won't wash.

#3  Yes Mike, I can almost see someone handing the Orange Man an intercept along with the discreet verbal caution; "hey boss, perhaps we might wish hold off just a bit".

No sense giving the SOB's another Vincennes incident on the run-up to the election. The downing of a couple of European airliners by "unknown persons" would have been a severe blow and one the Iranians would have celebrated wildly as a strategic wedge. 'Human shields'...not exactly a new concept in that region of the world. The loss of life would have obviously meant nothing.

The dems are already labeling him 'wishy washy' and a coward. Think of the political mileage the dems would have harvested had something gone terribly wrong.

#2  Beso,
It's starting to look like the Iranians were going to blow an airliner out of the sky, blame it on a nearby USN patrol plane, and then say, "See what you made us fo?"

#1  The FAA warned of a "potential for miscalculation or misidentification"

More likely a planned execution of hundreds of innocent civilian international air travelers by Iran, to be blamed on Trump.
