holding a Libyan Gathering "Multaqa" that will be sponsored by and coordinated with the UNSMIL, in order to gather all Libyan parties that advocate for peace, democracy and stability, excluding those who advocate for dictatorship and have had Libyan blood on their hands.
Al-Sarraj said the initiative comes despite the fact that the Libyan Army forces and the Operation Volcano of Rage forces are defeating the attacking forces of Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy, so it's kind of hard to describe him as a Qadaffy holdover. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...on the outskirts of Tripoli.
"The gathering should see Libyan parties agreeing on a roadmap for the upcoming phase along with the constitutional basis so Libyans can hold elections for their parliament and president before the end of 2019." al-Sarraj remarked.
He also announced forming a committee specialized in law in order to enact the needed laws for the agreed upon points in the upcoming gathering, adding that there will be joint committees formed with the UN to work in different areas in Libya to ensure all necessary equipment for elections and constitution events are delivered to people.
"There will be different committees as part of the initiative, including those who ensure transparency, advocate for comprehensive national reconciliation, punishment of war criminals and other matters." al-Sarraj further added.
He hailed the sacrifices of the fighters on the frontlines who have been able to hold back and defeat Haftar's attacking forces who wish to establish military and totalitarian rule in the country.
"I hereby talk to the Libyan people in eastern Libya and ask them to be careful because history is writing down our stances, so they should make public their rejection to tyranny and aggressions. I tell the silent majority of them "enough killing of our young people; enough funerals." al-Sarraj indicated.
