Middlebury College Cancels Conservative Philosopher's Lecture on Totalitarianism |
2019-04-20 |
[Free Beacon] Middlebury College has canceled a campus speech by conservative Polish Catholic philosopher Ryszard Legutko in response to planned protests by liberal activists. A professor of philosophy at Jagiellonian University and a member of the European Parliament, Legutko was scheduled to speak Wednesday at the Vermont college's Alexander Hamilton Forum, delivering a lecture entitled "The Demon in Democracy: Totalitarian Temptations in Free Societies." A member of the anti-Communist Polish resistance during the Cold War, Legutko warns that western democracy is also susceptible to creep towards totalitarianism. But in the days leading up to the speech, some Middlebury students and professors wrote an open letter demanding the university rescind its sponsorship. The liberal activists took issue with Legutko's pointed critiques of multiculturalism, feminism, and homosexuality, calling them "homophobic, racist, xenophobic, [and] misogynistic." "Inquiry, equity, and agency cannot be fostered in the same space that accepts and even elevates homophobic, xenophobic, misogynistic discourse," they demand. "Bigotry of any kind should not be considered a form of inquiry." |

#11 I'm so old I remember when the point of going to college was to get exposed to things you wouldn't find in your village back home. They have medications for that now. |

#9 The right has been tolerant of abusive tactics by the left for far too long. As the corrosion and erosion of decades of this has begun to endanger the foundations of our Republic is it time to begin asking a very dangerous question. If not now, when? If not here , where? If not us, who? |

#7 Can't have that guy speak. Makes the leadership of the college look bad. Yeah, no need for MMA fighters. Just some vets. They'll wipe the floor with the soy boys. |

#6 Raj is on the right track. As Berkeley demonstrated, we don't need MMA figters, just patriots ready to step up and reestablish their constitutional freedoms. When our speakers were getting cancelled, we simply held our own events, authorities be damned. When the li'l commies came out to try and stop us, we physically crushed them. Such effort wouldn't even be necessary in this particular case - just stand up to the damn crybullies. Unfrotunately, it's conservatives, not the Left, that have failed to learn the lessons of Berkeley. |

#4 Too bad we can't have conservative speakers who are also MMA fighters - send them in to speak and when the first soy-boys start acting up, just start kicking some ass, Bruce Lee style. |
