Trump to sign executive order launching artificial intelligence initiative
2019-02-12
[NYPOST] President Trump later Monday is expected to sign an executive order instructing the federal government to prioritize and dedicate resources to artificial intelligence, the White House said.

The initiative, titled "Maintaining American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence," urges "bold, decisive actions to ensure that AI continues to be fueled by American ingenuity, reflects American values and is applied for the benefit of the American people," a senior Trump administration official said in a background briefing Sunday evening.

In his State of the Union speech last week, Trump called for "investments in cutting edge industries" and the AI initiative is aimed to boost America’s leadership in the field.

The plan leaves the funding details up to Congress but directs federal agencies to assist workers in getting AI skills through fellowships, apprenticeships and training programs and computer science education.

The White House will offer guidelines to federal agencies but also instructs the National Institute of Standards and Technology to develop regulations for creating "reliable, robust, trustworthy, secure, portable, and interoperable AI systems."

As opposed to Silicon Valley's approach which is to hire H1B workers from India and China.

No fear that it will bite the hand that fed it? This is how I would overthrow the Chinese communist party.

China has established an elite corps of patriotic young researchers, opening highly sought after paths for teens and college aged students in this area. It would be a major mistake to underestimate how far ahead they are on the verge of becoming, including with quantum computing methods that will overturn the field entirely.
