Russia says that Venezuela must pay the debt on time
2019-01-30
[ELUNIVERSAL] Russia expects Venezuela to comply with its next debt payment to Moscow, which expires at the end of March, the Russian Ministry of Finance said Tuesday.

Earlier, Finance Minister Sergei Storchak foresaw that the Venezuelan government would have problems paying its commitments, after yesterday the US imposed sanctions on PDVSA.

"No changes have been made to the agreement and, consequently, Venezuela must comply with the obligations it has assumed with the creditor," the Russian Ministry, reported by Rooters, said.

Storchak said that Venezuela owes Russia about 3,000 million dollars that it returns in two annual payments of around 100 million dollars, and that the next one will expire in March.

Moscow also has broad commercial interests in the South American nation, including a partnership between the Russian oil company Rosneft and the sanctioned PDVSA.

Kremlin front man Dmitry Peskov said the sanctions against Venezuela are "illegal."
