#1 My father, when he wanted to motivate us kids, would start counting to three, after which, he promised, dire but undefined things would happen. “One,” he would say, very loudly and distinctly. “Two. Two and a half. Two and three quarters....” By this time, we would join in the count. “Two and seven eighths. Two and fifteen sixteenths...” I don’t remember ever getting to three, though surely we must have at some point in my childhood. Still, we all learnt our fractions beautifully, which was probably Daddy’s other objective. |
