Cameroon: Biya Sworn In, Challenger Arrested - Report
2018-11-07
[All Africa] President Paul Biya of Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
has been sworn into serve his seventh consecutive term as the head of state. This comes after he was declared winner of the presidential elections held on the 7th of October. According to official result by the electoral body ELECAM, Biya won with 71% of the votes.

Opposition parties have however rejected the results citing irregularities and massive fraud in some regions. Cabral Libii who represented the political party LE UNIVER has joined Maurice Kamto for the Movement Pour la Renaissance du Cameroun (MRC) in calling for a vote recount.

The restive North West and South West regions are showing little interest in the whole process and it might be an indication that the next seven years will be tumultuous for the newly-elected president.

There are reports by Cameroon Daily Journal that the runner up Professor Maurice Kamto has been tossed in the clink
Please don't kill me!
by government forces. No reason has been given for his arrest.

Professor Maurice Kamto, Maitre Simh, Professor Fogue and other member of the MRC are currently detained at the judicial police building in Elig Esson in the capital, Yaounde.
