UN court orders US to ditch Iran sanctions |
2018-10-03 |
[DW] The International Court of Justice has ruled that US sanctions on "humanitarian" goods must be dropped immediately. The US has contested the right of the court to intervene in matters between Washington and Tehran. The United Nations' top court on Wednesday ordered the United States to lift sanctions on humanitarian goods to Iran. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling is a blow to the Trump administration, which withdrew from the 2015 international nuclear accord in May and reimposed sanctions on Iran. The ICJ unanimously ruled that Washington "shall remove by means of its choosing any impediments arising from the measures announced on May 8 to the free exportation to Iran of medicines and medical devices, food and agricultural commodities." The Netherlands-based court said sanction on goods "required for humanitarian needs... may have a serious detrimental impact on the health and lives of individuals on the territory of Iran." US sanctions on spare parts for aircrafts were also ordered to be lifted because of the "potential to endanger civil aviation safety in Iran and the lives of its users." Decisions made by the ICJ are binding and cannot be appealed, but the court has no means of enforcing its rulings. The ruling is preliminary as hearing the full case is a process that could take years. |

#14 Decisions made by the ICJ are binding I eagerly await Bolton's response. He could have a lot of fun with this one. If this "court" is in New York, send in the NYPD and arrest them all for loitering. |

#11 The US should suggest that the UN move their headquarters to Iran to get a better feel for how the majority of the world lives. |

#10 The ICJ unanimously ruled that Washington "shall remove..." "Shall" is not a word you want to direct at us. Trust me on this. #6 Betcha, the Don will use this to cut a few more bucks from US payments to UN. Posted by: g(r)omgoru Better yet, cut ALL payments to the UN. |

#8 I wonder how old-time sieges would have ended up under these rules. Like the '88 version of Baron Munchausen. |

#2 Perhaps the US could re-apportion UN dues to such matters. UN dues could go to hurricane relief and other humanitarian issues, maybe even a little to Iran. As long as it doesn't go to the UN. |

#1 Fuck you. Good luck enforcing that. BTW... isn't it time to re-evaluate your funding for next year? |
