EU claims the right to control all thought on the Net!
2018-09-12
[BBC] Google, Facebook and Twitter must remove extremist content within an hour or face hefty fines, the European Commission's president has said.

In his annual State of the Union address to the European Parliament, Jean-Claude Juncker said an hour was a "decisive time window".

Net firms had been given three months in March to show they were acting faster to take down radical posts.

But EU regulators said too little was being done.

If authorities flag content that incites and advocates extremism, the content must be removed from the web within an hour, the proposal from the EU's lead civil servant states. Net firms that fail to comply would face fines of up to 4% of their annual global turnover.

The proposal will need backing from the countries that make up the European Union as well as the European Parliament.

#6  Google might suck but how much does EU suck if they have to censor Google?

Sounds like Juncker's been taking lessons from Xi Jinping.

#4  ICANN went private once Obama 'freed' them from USG oversight.

"On October 1, 2016, ICANN ended its contract with the United States Department of Commerce National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and entered the private sector.[54]

On May 25, 2018, the EU attempts to enforce its GDPR impact on ICANN operations.[clarification needed][citation needed] The deadline coincided with French President Macron's hosting of megatech bosses such as Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, IBM CEO Ginni Rometty, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich, Samsung President Young Sohn, and SAP CEO Bill McDermott."

#3  The capricious nature of our lords and ladies taxing policies. Don't mistake it for anything less. It's the Willy Sutton approach to revenue. Sort of fueled more than one major rebellion in the history books. Long past to tell the EU, if they are such big boys, to defend themselves and build their own net.

#2  I don't know about the drunk part, but I wouldn't be surprised. The meat of this is the threat to the pocketbook of Google, et al. And what's this? "Authorities" doing the flagging of content? That's a flaw, they will get bought. Or is that a feature?

On the other hand, as much as I despise the EC, I am in favor of anything that injures GoogleFacebookTwitter, even for a short time. Drag their managing staff to the International Criminal Court when they don't knuckle under. Bolton won't like that, but I can see the bounty hunters lining up. Progressive World Gov. vs. Progressive Oligarchs. Cheering for both sides to lose big.

In my dreams anyway.
