Virus Alert
2018-09-09
Virus Alert: Got a nefarious virus on Thursday night – if you're linking to a new page and instead of a Console Window you get a Windows Viewing screen that's a dark gray-blue in color and the (X) kill option is disabled, don't click on the kill button displayed on the screen. (Firefox on Windows XP-SP3.)

At least that's my best guess. I took the opportunity to go with Windows 10 on a new system today – total ticket $340.

Source: Got in under the radar of Norton Online which comes automatically with my ISP. Doesn't appear to be targeted or have anything to do with Rantburg. Was looking at several of those medical sites (re: ranitidine) and the Drudge Report at the time and with 6-10 Windows open, I would click on some sub-links that were displayed.

#6  Fairbanks - that's why I never install printer updates of any kind. It's embedded in the firmware & a bitch to get out. I still don't know why I have an HP printer - they do firmware updates that prevent you from using non-HP printer cartridges, which would be the last straw for me.

#5  Here's another interesting angle on the virus - I've got an HP 1012 Laserjet printer, the TU-154 workhorse of massive printing capabilities (it's got it's own processor), and it is now a vehicle to spread malicious viruses!

HPSBHF03589 rev. 4 - HP Ink Printers Remote Code Execution

Last updated : 13-Aug-2018

VULNERABILITY SUMMARY
Two security vulnerabilities have been identified with certain HP Inkjet printers. A maliciously crafted file sent to an affected device can cause a stack or static buffer overflow, which could allow remote code execution.

The driver for my HP1012 didn't survive the change in systems and is no longer available, so now I need a new printer.

#1  Of course, if your system is now stuck because of the nefarious viewing window, kill Firefox with a Cntl/Alt/Del, and select Processes, then kill Firefox. When you re-start Firefox, kill the 1st & 2nd windows that show up, and re-try.
