The Origins of Our Second Civil War
2018-08-01
How, when, and why has the United States now arrived at the brink of a veritable civil war?

Almost every cultural and social institution ‐ universities, the public schools, the NFL, the Oscars, the Tonys, the Grammys, late-night television, public restaurants, coffee shops, movies, TV, stand-up comedy ‐ has been not just politicized but also weaponized.

Donald Trump’s election was not so much a catalyst for the divide as a manifestation and amplification of the existing schism.

#7  Civil war has been going on for awhile now. Conservatives finally noticed and elected someone to fight back so it seems sudden when it has been a long time coming.

#5  When I voted for Trump I was hopeful that after 8 years things would turn and our nation would find center again, hence no civil war. Now I'm not so sure. The divisiveness and the outright hate on the left will only grow stronger. GDP could be at 8%, the US debt could be at zero, and cancer could be cured and they will still hate the bible clutching flyovers... At the end of Trumps term, be it two or six years, the left will come for retribution. It will be visceral and unending. The industrial middle class will become the enemy of the state, persecuted, demonized in law, and taxed into poverty. I see no way out of this. There is no where for their hate to go, they will not be able to wind it down, they will come after us. protect your assets, your 401K will not survive, move your cash into some hard assets, because it will be relentless...

#4  I saw how long this piece was, scanned the conclusion, and wondered - who wrote this long-winded sermon?

Ahhhh, Victor Davis Hanson. I will have to read it all.

#3  The fight for American independence involved a lot of nasty blood on blood violence to qualify as the first Civil War. The behaviors in places like the Carolinas were at times less civil than the troubles of 1861-65.

#2  I think the ordinary man has been far too passive in not starving those mentally ill folk who believe they have the obligation to impose their beliefs on others and are special and thus worthy of living on others backs while they make their omelette.

#1  The Left still believes the future is on its side and that there is no need to take a breath or compromise save on minor matters, and even then only temporarily.

I think we're in that twilight time of history where the reckoning hasn't fully manifested, but it is already too late to prevent it.
