#2 There's a general law of human performace called Fitt's Law that comes out of WWII. It states that performance follows an inverted U-shaped curve. There is an optimal level of performance at the top of the U-shaped curve. Performance falls off on either side of this optimum. Too little stimulation and performance suffers because of a loss of vigilance; too much stimulation and performance suffers because processing overload.
So, the research makes quite a bit of sense. It has implications for pilots, radar observers and drone missile operators as well as others where long vigils of monitoring are required. |
