It's not right to equate sexual assault with misplaced compliments: Morgan Freeman
2018-05-28
[IMAGES.DAWN] Morgan Freeman says he likes to compliment people to make them feel at ease around him but that he has never sexually assaulted women.

The Academy Award-winning actor is fighting back against charges of bad behavior made by multiple women in a CNN report this week. He said in a statement late Friday that the report has devastated him and that "it is not right to equate horrific incidents of sexual assault with misplaced compliments or humor."

Following the report, Visa announced it was suspending all of its marketing that features the actor’s voice.

CNN’s story includes one movie production assistant who said Freeman unsuccessfully tried to lift her skirt. Other women talked about unwanted touching on their backs and shoulders. Mostly, Freeman’s accusers say he would comment about their bodies or clothes or make them uncomfortable by staring. A male former employee of Freeman’s production company said the 80-year-old actor would behave like a "creepy uncle."

One of the article’s authors, Chloe Melas, began working on it following a press junket where she said Freeman clasped her hand, looked her up and down and made comments like, "you are ripe."

"I admit that I am someone who feels a need to try to make women, and men, feel appreciated and at ease around me," Freeman said. "As a part of that, I would often try to joke with and compliment women, in what I thought was a light-hearted and humorous way. Clearly I was not always coming across the way I intended."

#10  Remember the fuss before the election because Mike Pence would not dine alone with a woman not his wife, nor go to functions where alcohol was served without her? He was accused of sex discrimination, patriarchalism, and religious bigotry for it, but look at all the trouble he avoided. Ane example from the L.A. Times can be read here.

#9  Well, I won't have a closed door meeting alone with a woman. To protect myself.

...Well, yes. In their little world everybody got along and kept their mouths shut and hated Trump. On the political side, we've seen more than a few guys who were allowed to keep on assaulting women because they voted the right way (see also 'Eric Schneiderman'), and it's quite likely the glitterati felt the same rules applied there - "We say the right things, so we'll be forgiven'. Remember Harvey's FIRST statement when this came out? He was going to double down on the NRA, f'r God's sake. He really thought that would bail him out.

Worst part is that it's going to change, just not the way they want. It's possible the overt harassment and assault will throttle back considerably - for a while at least - but remember that the major players in Hollywood will still be overwelmingly men. Scared men. Vengeful men. I'd be willing to bet that when this is over, the actresses who were the first to #MeToo will find that a great many doors once open are now closed.

#7  Be interesting if, in addition to naming other Hollywood lechers, he names women who were willing in order to get into the acting biz.
They'd have no defense, since, 1, they were in the biz, and, 2. there were no witnesses so the inference is, and, 3. as Handsy Harve's attorney said, he didn't invent the casting couch.
Each one of the named women may well be completely innocent. But the smear will not go away.

Jeez, what a mess. As to the circling torpedo...what were they thinking? That this could never happen?

...Even better may be to come. When Harvey Weinstein turned himself in the other day, he was rather ostentatiously carrying a book by Elia Kazan, the Hollywood director who was reviled by the community for having named names during the McCarthy era. The inference is that if ol' Harv is going down, he's taking people with him.

I believe that Conan the Barbarian should be paraphrased here: "What is best in life? To see your enemies #MeToo'ed, to see them digitally erased, and to hear the lamentations of their agents and significant others."

Popcorn, anyone?
