| Gazans to burn thousands of tires at border |

| [Jpost] Palestinians plan to engulf the Gaza border with smoke and flames from thousands of burning tires on Friday as Israel holds firm to its order to shoot any protesters who come close to the security barrier. In the past several days, groups of young Gazans have been collecting old tires around the Strip and bringing them to the border. Palestinians intend to light the tires on fire to blur the vision of the soldiers on the Israeli side of the security fence, according to a Gaza-based source familiar with preparations for what he called "the Friday of Old Tires. | #11 If your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere and you want to call attention to your location, set your spare tire on fire - well away from your car, of course. The reasonably smoke column is easy to see in daylight & reasonably clear weather. |

| #6 A friend of mine was in Viet Nam back in the day and was rotating home after his last patrol. He had wanted a pair of Ho Chi Min sandals (made from old tires and worn by the VC) and decided to get a pair on this patrol. He did get a pair and when relating the story at work the lady next to us asked how he got a pair out in the jungle. She was appaled when he told her he took them off a VC. She said, "How could you take that poor man's Shoes?" He sai, "Lady, that "poor man" was trying to kill me a few minutes earlier and I figured he wouldn't need them any more". I laughed till I hurt. |

| #5 Burning tires produce smoke and soot as well as the deadly warming poison CO2. Greenpeace should be up in (peaceful) arms about this. |

| #3 No. No recycling. I remember a pair of sandals I used to have that were made in Mexico using old tires. I had those things for years and they never came close to wearing out. I finally lost them and that was a sad day because they were cool. The point is, instead of being destructive and making fools of themselves the Palestinians could be finding creative, peaceful and even profitable uses for those old tires. But then, they are Palestinians. |
