Scores of Al-Qaeda militants slain during botched assault on besieged Shiite-majority towns |

![]() The assault, described as an infiltration operation by local military-affiliated sources who first reported the event, was stopped dead in its tracks by local Syrian pro-government troops defending both towns. Within a very brief engagement time, local Syrian forces bumped off at least 15 jihadists. The remaining al-Qaeda attackers were sent running from the battlefield under a hail of machine gun and mortar fire. The murderous Moslems attempting to storm Fouaa and Kafraya belonged to Ha’yat Tahrir al-Sham ![]() ...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli al-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ... ). Followers of the group (and other Salafist jihadist militias in Syria) have marked the towns’ mostly Shiite population for extermination, believing them to be apostates. |
