Were Cuban 'Sonic Attacks' on our Embassy Due to Malfunctioning Surveillance Gear?

[Miami Herald via PJ] The State Department announced that the cuts made to embassy staff in Havana after strange and unexplained "sonic attacks" sickened diplomats and their families will become permanent.
Cicada? No, that's a symptom not a cause.
But the attacks themselves remain a mystery. However, a team of computer research scientists at the University of Michigan may have an explanation: malfunctioning surveillance equipment.

Miami Herald:

Professor Kevin Fu and members of the Security and Privacy Research Group at the University of Michigan say they have an explanation for what could have happened in Havana: two sources of ultrasound ‐ such as listening devices ‐ placed too close together could generate interference and provoke the intense sounds described by the victims.

Perhaps the TDYers were issued defective devices upon arrival. Who knows, refer it to the Rantburg DARPA branch for further investigation. Sonic sufferers can be referred to the VA. That should deflect the onerous whining and delay costly medical payouts.

#4  I've re-read the article twice, but I'm thinking it was our own counter surveillance equipment. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the anomaly was limited to just a few rooms or offices of the building itself.
