Number of cholera cases in Yemen hits one million |
2017-12-22 |
[Al Jazeera] The number of cholera cases in Yemen ![]() has hit one million people according to the International Committee of the Red Thingy (ICRC), a new milestone for what was already one of the fastest growing outbreaks of the deadly disease in modern history. After almost three years of war between a Saudi-led coalition and Houthi ...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews... rebels, more than 80 percent of Yemenis lack access to food, fuel, clean water, and healthcare. As of late September, cholera had killed more than 2,200 people in Yemen, according to UN figures. Although cholera has a death rate of 0.3 percent, the size of the outbreak combined with the lack of equipment and medical staff to deal with the crisis puts thousands more at risk of death. |

#7 They don’t have enough water, and waste what they have; they haven’t enough fuel to boil what they do have; and most of the country is under the influence of qat from noon onward each day, so even filtering the water before use is likely not done consistently. Then there are the wars — Houthis against Saudi Arabia, Al Qaeda against whoever wanders by their tribal hideouts... The wonder is that they all aren’t dead of everything. |
