Islam researcher: Not all Salafists are the same [DW] Q: Not all Salafists are potentially violent. How to you make distinctions within the group? The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (Editor's note: Germany's domestic intelligence agency) believes there to be around 10,000 people in the Salafist scene.
I roughly break down the group down into Salafists who are purists, those who are political and those who are jihadists. Around two-thirds are apolitical purists and political Salafists. And then there is around a third who are potentially violent, or who support violence.

#2 "Germany's domestic intelligence agency) believes there to be around 10,000 people in the Salafist scene. In other words, a very low number compared to the 3-4 million Muslims in Germany. I roughly break down the group down into Salafists who are purists, those who are political and those who are jihadists." There is the George W. distinction again of "good Muslims and bad Muslims." Even a relatively small number of these jihadist Salafists do a great deal of damage to the fabric of a country. Why don't the good Salafists purge the bad Salafists from their ranks? There are a lot of supporters of the jihadists who don't engage in jihad but support those who do. And also there are the twin concepts of taqiya and kitman. |
