U.S. reverses Obama-era move to phase out private prisons
2017-02-24
[Reuters] The U.S. Justice Department has reversed an order by the Obama administration to phase out the use of private contractors to run federal prisons.

In a memo made public on Thursday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the Obama policy impaired the government's ability to meet the future needs of the federal prison system.

The Obama administration said in August 2016 it planned a gradual phase-out of private prisons by letting contracts expire or by scaling them back to a level consistent with recent declines in the U.S. prison population.

It said privately operated prisons were less safe and a poor substitute for government-run facilities.

#4  One of the few things I agreed with that Obumble did.

The corporations that run these have their lobbyists keep the drug laws strict and the war hot. Gotta keep bodies flowing into their prisons.
Prisons are supposed to be expensive for governments to maintain. It helps keep laws reasonable in a democracy.

#3  Ah, yeah, just look at the pay and pension deal the California corrections union has rung out of the state and taxpayers. Remember how that relationship of union money and pols have influenced politics there.

#2  It said privately run prisons are less safe and a poor substitute for government-run facilities.

The problem here is that the foundations for those claims are dubious - at best. But if true, which it's not, the insinuation that somehow by virtue of Government operated these facilities are "safer" is nonsense. There may be legitimate reasons to consider such policies. But the basis for the Obama Administration prison policy was bogus.

#1  This is one of the few things the Obama administration got right!

Private prisons is a bad idea, just follow the money and you'll see why,, Judges been busted for sending people to those private prisons in return for a "fee" among other things.
