Syrian regulars capture height in Homs
2016-09-06
HOMS – Subsequent to clashes with militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS), Syrian army forces on Monday regained control of a strategic hill in the central Homs province. Syrian regime’s army troops expelled ISIS militants from the Sawana hill in eastern Homs.

“Our forces killed at least 23 Daesh terrorists before the rest were forced to withdraw from Sawana on Monday evening,” Syrian army officer Fouad Hammoud told ARA News, using another acronym for ISIS.

Last Wednesday, the Islamic State group took control of the strategic Sawana hill –that overlooks the southwestern part of the ancient Palmyra city in Homs province– after bombing Syrian army positions with mortar fire.

“Today’s advance by our forces proved that the Syrian army is still in control of Homs province, and that Daesh movements are restricted,” the military official said.

The militant group captured last week some 11 Syrian army checkpoints in the vicinity of Palmyra city. However, ISIS fighters were forced to leave the checkpoints under airstrikes by Syrian and Russian warplanes, military sources reported.
