Dodgers ballgirl saves phone-using fan from taking a 108.7 mph line drive to the head
2016-08-01
Video at link. :-)
A spectator seated in the first row at Dodger Stadium should be forever grateful of the ballgirl who worked Sunday's game between the Dodgers and Diamondbacks.

During the eighth inning, Arizona's Brandon Drury scorched a line drive foul towards the left-field stands. The ballgirl saw the baseball the entire way and made an outstanding backhanded catch. She calmly caught the ball and handed it to the fan in the blue shirt.

In the slow-motion replay, that same fan in the blue can be seen with his head down, likely looking at the phone he was holding in his left hand. It wasn't until after the ballgirl's sensational catch that the fan flinched or reacted to a baseball traveling towards his head.

Statcast registered the liner at 108.7 mph.

That trip to the ballpark could have ended terribly if not for the ballgirl's quick reaction.

Vin Scully certainly appreciated the catch. I'm sure that fan's face did as well.

#5  What SWFF said. Baseball is glorious in person DURING DAYLIGHT AS DAWG INTENDED. And foods, lots of overpriced foods.

#3  Took my daughter to TOR@KC last year after her season ended.

The fans, it was like watching a prairie dog town.

I watched all those games on TV, wishing I was there....get there, and all those fans watching the game on TV (phone, whatever).

I can get some of it - playoffs are in the air, likely playoff matchup, watch a replay, text-5 your friends, photo with the mascot, photo of the packed stadium, so forth.

I just do not think an attendee gets the full experience when poking their head in the cloud every 15 seconds.

Put the phone down, grab a beer and nachos, some BBQ if lucky enough to be in KC, and stay off my lawn.

No, the thing that got me was the chucklehead who acted like I was ruining his phone time by talking to my daughter about defensive positioning.

#2  Maybe these Gen X, Millenial ninnies should leave their precious cellphones in the car and enjoy a baseball game without having to text friends or something.

#1  Great catch, backhand catches are never routine.

I like the one where Bruce Wayne catches that bat before it hit a boy playing phone.

Too many fans are worse than tee-ballers and butterflys/clouds.

Was watching KC@TEX when a fan tried to catch a foul ball with his forehead. Announcers, a bit concerned and a bit frustrated, (badly quoted) "Folks - if you are going to a baseball game and not sitting behind a net - pay attention, and bring your glove."
