| Pakistan accuses Bangladesh of 'killing' opposition leaders through flawed trials |

| [DAWN] The Foreign Office on Wednesday said it was deeply saddened over the hanging of the Jamat-e-Islami (JI) Bangladesh chief Motiur Rahman Nizami ...During the liberation war of 1971, Nizami formed the Al-Badr Force and acted as its supreme commander. The Al-Badr militia took active part in rape, extortion, looting and killing of Bangladeshis who supported the liberation, including a pre-planned massacre on December 14, 1971, when the Al-Badr militia along with Pakistan Army rounded up hundreds of doctors, professors, writers, and other Bengali intellectuals, and executed them... after a decision by a controversial war crimes tribunal for his involvement in 1971 events. "The act of suppressing the opposition by killing their leaders through flawed trials is completely against the spirit of democracy," Foreign Office front man Nafees Zakaria said in a statement. The statement said it is "unfortunate" for the people of Bangladesh who had elected Nizami as their representative in the parliament. |
