These are the Pentagon's 'kinetic fireball incendiaries' aimed at destroying WMD bunkers
2016-03-02
... the fireballs function alongside a 2,000 pound BLU-109B bunker bomb, Flight Global reports. These bunker bombs are able to punch through six feet reinforced concrete. After punching into a bunker, the bomb would then release its internal kinetic incendiaries.

Once inside a bunker or structure, the rocket balls get to work. Essentially, the balls are hollowed out spheres comprised of rubberized rocket fuel that have a hole on the outside. As Technovelgy notes, this hole causes the balls, once ignited, to expel hot air in excess of 1,000 degrees Farenheit .

I'm afraid to ask if that needs a couple adult beverages to be told. :)

I have one about putting a bunch of brown in my pants. It does :) though wife didn't find the humor in it.

VRWC, that is the conclusion we came to out here concerning the end of The Rock with the airstrike and hostages.

#9  I thought about doing a /O'Donnell but didn't have a pack of powdered donuts to cram into my fingernails.

Had a hell of a time trying to explain that the Tower Fires were essentially large blast furnaces.

#8  As I recollect, the neutron bomb was a nuclear device that was optimized to minimize the blast while maximizing neutron production. Even a small nuclear blast wouldn't do any nearby structures any good. I think that an air burst over a city would kill the people (neutrons go through 17 feet of lead) but if the burst was high enough would spare the buildings. Still, I wonder what all those neutrons would do to the structural steel. ;-)

#7  Sw., just remember the World Trade Towers. The insulation was faulty and when the heat got to the structural steel it failed and the towers collapsed.

Nguard, was there something about the article that was badly stated?

#6  @#1: As I understand it, Neutron bombs are an air-burst thingie.

KFI's, otoh, are used more for taking out Chu Chi-style "architecture." Being somewhat thermobaric, I would imagine they are also a pretty efficient sucker of O2 as well (?).

#5  Fire warps steel. In a fire you are better off with wooden cross beams under the floor than steel. It takes time to burn through the wood. Steel warps quickly. I have this on the authority of a member in good standing of the Emerald Society Firefighters. :-)

#4  Ha! Fire don't melt steel!

#3  It is so cute when j school grads try to explain technical stuff that they don't even begin to understand. It is right up there with Atheists trying to tell me about Christianity, or muslims about Islam.

#2  1000 F? Seems like structural steel might disagree about the intact part.

#1  the use of such incendiary devices could allow the military to effectively clear out a building without damaging the structure's integrity

Isn't that what JimUh tol' us the Neutron Bomb was for?
