#2  Exports from the United States to the UK and British SA expanded considerably during the Boer War. The average annual value of these exports of about $577. million during 1899-1902 marked in increase of around $112. million over their average for 1899-1902. The most significant wartime expert were horses and mules. Over 100,000 of the former and over 80,000 of the latter were shipped from the U.S. to South Africa, about half of all the mules used in the British forces originated in America. Very large quantities of cartridges, hay, oats, and preserved meat were also sold. In addition, loans from US bankers underwrote approximately 20 percent of the cost of Britains war.

As an aside; these horses and mules did not come home. Domestic recovery from these exports lagged well into the WW1, placing our own soldiers lacking for horses, mules, and teams at the U.S. entry to the 'War to end all Wars.'

To get a feel for today's US dollar values, simply multiply 1899-1902 dollars by a conservative factor of 10. You'll be hitting the green with only a short putt remaining.
