Clinton calls for an end to US immigration raids
2016-01-13
[Daily Excelsior] Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as the Smartest Woman in the World and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Dean Acheson ...
called today for an end to raids by US officials to deport undocumented Central American families, saying they were divisive
...politicians call things divisive when when the other side sez something they don't like. Their own statements are never divisive, they're principled...
and sowing fear in immigrant communities.

Breaking with President Barack Obama
I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody...
, Clinton condemned the raids carried out by the Department of Homeland Security and released a plan that she said would help protect Central American families seeking asylum.

"I do not think the raids are an appropriate tool to enforce the immigration laws. In fact, I think they are divisive, they are sowing discord and fear," Clinton said at the Iowa Brown and Black forum on minority issues.

Rivals for the Democratic nomination Senator Bernie Sanders
...The only openly Socialist member of the U.S. Senate. Sanders was Representative-for-Life from Vermont until moving to the Senate for the rest of his life in 2006, assuming the seat vacated by Jim Jeffords...
of Vermont and former Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley
...former Democratic governor of Maryland and aspiring presidential candidate, known locally as The One-Man Economic Wrecking Crew. O'Malley was elected to his second term driven by union support and near-Stalinesque vote margins in Baltimore city (82%) and Prince George's County (88%). He presided over more than 40 tax or fee increases, including a rain tax and a flush tax...
have both spoken out against the raids, and participated in the forum.

Clinton had been slower to distance herself from the policy, though it has been condemned by many immigration groups and Democrats in Congress.

As she spoke at the forum, Clinton's campaign released a statement and paper calling for a stop to the raids. It also advocated government-funded counsels for all unaccompanied minors in immigration court and a long-term, comprehensive fix to asylum and refugee programs that would include more officers, translators and immigration judges, as well as investment in development in Central America.

"If the United States takes the lead in organizing a regional coalition to respond to this crisis, I believe we can make a serious difference," Clinton said in a statement.

Polls show Clinton, the front-runner for the Democratic nomination in the November election, is clinging to a narrow lead over Sanders in Iowa, which kicks off the nominating race on February 1. The polls show she trails him in the next state to vote, New Hampshire.

The recent raids pursued families with undocumented members, in what some immigration groups viewed as a response by officials to a deter Central Americans flooding across the boder in the southwest.

Sanders said the United States should be careful in deporting the undocumented back to potentially unstable situations in Central America.

"We have a moral responsibility. What refugee status is about is to make sure that people are not forced to return to communities where their lives may be in danger," he told the forum.

#4  I always liked the concept of getting them to self-deport by depriving them of job opportunities, welfare, education and drivers licenses. But the raids don't bother me. Sowing fear and discord in their communities is an added benefit. Bottom line is just get 'em outta here.

#3  The raids may be just kabuki, but the illegals affected have already had their day in court and are deportable. Why shouldn't we start with them?

Just do it

#2  These raids are ridiculous. They are expensive, and I think they are done on purpose to make people think that getting illegals out of their country is a bad thing.

Yes, yet another example of 'motion confused with progress.' Real progress begins at the border. I dislike the idea of 'raids' for another reason.

Better way: Make sure only citizens and legal residents are allowed housing. Anyone caught breaking this law gets their place put up for public auction. If it doesn't get at least half of what it's worth, it's bulldozed and burned with all contents in place. The money goes to building The Wall.
