#3  Well they could have done the Hughes Chain gun treatment or one of the variations of that on the barrel. A gun drill bore prior to heat treat then heat treat to extreme hardness and then grind bore to final size then etch the rifling in.

#1  I assume there is something about the heat treatment of the barrel that prevents cracking when quenched with plain water.
