Russia adding 2nd airbase in Syria, pursuing 'expansion' in military campaign
2015-12-02
[FOXNEWS] Russia has expanded its military operations in Syria to include a second airbase as well as other posts, according to a U.S. official briefed on the latest intelligence from the region -- even as President B.O. expresses muted optimism that Russian President Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President and sixth of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
eventually will "shift" his strategy and work with the West.

Moscow's presence has grown to a total of four forward operating bases, including recently added bases in Hama and Tiyas. But the most concerning to the Pentagon is the second airbase in Shayrat which can support fixed-wing aircraft, greatly expanding Russia's capability for Arclight airstrikes, which began on Sept. 30.

"The Russians are operating helicopters out of Shayrat airport, but they are making [preparations] to land fixed-wing aircraft," another U.S. official confirmed to Fox News.

Shayrat is located 25 miles outside of the Syrian city of Homs, an hour drive from neighboring Leb.

#6  I still don't understand why this is concerning the pentagon.

They're outflanking the Turks. We're still locked in an 'entangling alliance' with an idiot near the football. The Instaprof touches on it.

#5  Onthe bright side- If russia is making trouble in syria, they are not doing it elsewhere. Posted by Nguard

Never let old fashioned pragmatism and common sense taint the method in which the Obama regime reacts to international events. Their 'Arab Spring' narrative is at stake here.

#3   AND we maybe get to see those S-300s in action.

They are S-400's,(SA-21 GROWLER) IIRC. And we most assuredly will. In fact, I suspect we are now, if any components are in country and are in the process of setting up.

Between us and the Israelis, I suspect there will be very little we won't know about anything the Russians deploy to Syria.

I suspect there will be a lot of updating of libraries soon-ish.

#1  On the bright side- If russia is making trouble in syria, they are not doing it elsewhere. We get a clear, unobstructed view of some of their latest EW/ELINT and related capabilities.

We also get to make snarky comments on any mistakes they make while having a clear view.

Downside- See strong horse vs. weak horse.
