China: Will respond to US ships with all necessary means

[Richmond Times] BEIJING (AP) -- China's military will take "all necessary" measures in response to any future U.S. Navy incursions into what it considers its territorial waters around islands in the South China Sea, a Defense Ministry spokesman said Thursday.

The statement by Col. Yang Yujun followed the sailing of a U.S. guided missile destroyer within the 12-nautical mile (22-kilometer) territorial limit of one of the islands newly created by China in the strategically vital region. The U.S. refuses to recognize the man-made islets as deserving of sovereign territory status.

The Chinese side took no forceful action during the USS Lassen's sail-by on Tuesday, but strenuously protested the maneuver. China's reaction fits the pattern in similar such incidents in recent years. Yang offered no details on how Beijing might respond differently in the future.
Is the Champ setting us up for the ultimate international embarrassment ?

#7 US Navy has rules of engagement they have to follow. I'm sure the Chinese are aware of the ROE and have worked out what to do.

#6 As proud and confident I am in my USN compatriots, 0-7 and above are sadly more pliant in our military after 7 years of Flag Officer management by this WH. Don't think so, consider the Bergdahl case and the complicit way they have let it be slow-walked, partially compromised by an ambitious JAG and 0-8, and now, quietly in the MSM, turned into a whistleblower case and sad victim story. I think the same coercive power will float out of Champ and his staff of synchophants.

#3 He's weak. They know he's weak, so they are pushing for any and all possible concessions before he leaves office. He will give in to any demand rather than have his "legacy" um, tarnished? by an embarrassing incident.

We can all look forward to another 15 months or so of international humiliations.
