It's Misrata, not Misurata, says city council
2015-09-30
[Libya Herald] Misrata authorities have decided that the name of the town, in Latin script, is Misrata, not Misrata. The latter, it has said, is an Italian colonial pronunciation and spelling, continued during the Qadaffy era. It also says that in Arabic, it is مصراتة not مصراته.
Glad they cleared that up. I was wondering.
It is not clear if the decision will be quickly accepted in the city. The university, the central hospital and the Free Trade zone all use Misrata, as do many other entities in the city .

The Libya Herald, which uses Misrata, have been criticised on several occasions in the past by locals for not using Misrata.

Is not to be called Misurata.
A matter of honor!
That U is a goner,
Miserata's persona non grata."
