| French Islamist escapee warns 'You'll be hearing about me' |

| [Telegraph] A Frenchman radicalized in prison has gone on the run after reportedly telling inmates they would "soon be hearing about him". The man, who was in jail for armed and violent robbery, was granted temporary leave of absence from Chauconin-Meaux prison. He had been allowed out on several previous occasions, but on September 20 did not return, prompting the local prosecutor to issue an “immediate search warrant”. In a disturbing development, Le Point magazine reported that shortly before disappearing, the unnamed man had told another inmate that they would "soon be hearing about him". A source close to the investigation said that prison authorities had "identified him for his increasingly assiduous religious practice". French prisons, where unofficial estimates suggest that more than two thirds of inmates are Muslim, are frequently cited as centers of radicalization. Dominique Many, a lawyer involved involved in several terror cases, said, "A lot of my clients were radicalized in prison. They are very well organized. They know how to protect the weak to draw them into the system. They say you’re their family, and then you’re trapped." |
