2015-09-24 |
![]() The two reporters - Canadian Mohamed Fahmy and Egyptian Baher Mohammed - were later released from prison. A third person from the case was also pardoned but was not identified by name. The three were handed three year sentences last month for airing what a court described as "false news" and biased coverage. Egyptian activists Yara Sallam and Sanaa Seif were among about 100 people pardoned by President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi on the eve of Eid al-Adha, when the nation's president usually pardon convicts for health or other reasons. The long-running trial of the three Al-Jazeera staff is part of a wider political conflict between Egypt and Qatar following the Egyptian army's 2013 ouster of Mohammed Morsi. |
