#3 The "Nazi" salute was lifted from the Italian fascists, who lifted it and the idea from the Romans. You were supposed to holler "ave!" as you were giving it. In the 1930s, before the fascists and the Nazis were murderous enemies, fascism--the corporate state, everybody working together toward a common goal--was the Wave of the Future. Most of the countries in Europe had fascist parties, until the were running out of different colored shirts. It was considered a good thing (in theory) to have bands of fascisti running around a country righting wrongs. My grandfather had been an idealistic fascist in Italia until some other idealistic fascists tried to bump him off, at which point he headed south, from Fiume to Reggio Calabria, got married, emigrated, an got a job. Probably he hollered something like "ave atque vale" when he left, but I never asked him because at the time I was young and idealistic and merely knew that Fascists were bad guys. |

#2 I'm still waiting for all the old Bolsheviks and their fellow travellers to receive their just desserts. |

#1 I'm still waiting for the video of the Queen Mother learning to shoot her pistol at Buckingham Palace during the Blitz. That also really happened. |
