IS attack in Egypt's North Sinai kills over 100
2015-07-02
[DAWN] The self-styled Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) bully boyz attacked several military checkpoints in Egypt's North Sinai on Wednesday in a co-ordinated assault that killed more than 100 people -- one of the biggest holy warrior strikes in Egypt's modern history.

Soldiers, coppers, civilians and gunnies were among the dead.

IS' Egyptian affiliate, Sinai Province, grabbed credit and said that it had attacked more than 15 security sites and carried out three suicide kabooms.

Egypt's armed forces said that at least 100 gunnies and 17 soldiers had been killed.

One security source said about 300 holy warriors, armed with heavy weapons and anti-aircraft weaponry, had taken part in the attacks while the army said five checkpoints were hit and the fighting had raged for more than eight hours.

The assault -- a significant escalation in violence in the Sinai Peninsula that lies between Israel, the Gazoo Strip and the Suez Canal - was the second high-profile attack in Egypt this week. On Monday, a bomb killed the prosecutor-general in Cairo.

The hard boys, who have killed hundreds of coppers and soldiers, want to topple the Cairo government and have stepped up their campaign since 2013, when then-army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sissi removed President Mohammed Mursi of the Moslem Brüderbund after mass protests against his rule.

Sisi, who regards the Brotherhood as a threat to national security, has since overseen a harsh crackdown on Islamists.
Al Ahram liveblogged the day's events here. Of note, Egyptian army Apache helicopters and F-16s were used in the counter attacks against the miscreants, and IS planted IEDs on the highways to hinder troop movements.
