group (IS/ISIS) planted large deal of explosives and mines in the archaeological locations of the Syrian ancient city of Palmyra (Tadmur), as a prelude to detonate them, activists reported on Sunday.

The radical group has been in control of the ancient city since last May.

"The group intends to blow up monuments in Palmyra," said Yazan Qutna, a Syrian civil rights activist.

Other sources reported that the IS faceless myrmidons planted mines in the ancient city in an attempt to prevent possible progress by the Syrian army.

IS gained control of Palmyra nearly a month ago after fierce battles with Syrian army forces.

Noteworthy, the Islamic State destroyed a number of archaeological sites in Iraq and Syria, as well as several religious shrines, castles and monasteries. International organizations and archaeologists expect IS to destroy the old city of Palmyra.
