| 69 Schools Close Over Security Issues in Uruzgan |

| [Tolo News] Uruzgan deputy head of the provincial education department Mohammad Noor Amini has said that at least 69 schools have closed due to insecurity in Uruzgan. Amini said that there are 290 schools in the province of which 69 have closed over security issues. Apparently 19 schools are closed in Trinkot, the scenic provincial capital, 16 in Gizab district, 18 in Chinartoo district, 10 in Khas Urozgan district, four in Deh Rawud district and two others in Chora district. This comes on the heels of growing concerns in Kandahar over the growing number of parents pulling their girl-children out of school, long before they complete Grade 12. According to education officials, thousands of Grade 1 girls are enrolled each year but parents are not letting them continue their studies once passing grades 7 or 8. Officials say that each year about 10 000 girls are enrolled into schools but less than 1,000 of them will graduate from Grade 12. Officals say that currently 76,000 girls are at schools in the province but that 144 schools have closed due to security issues. This year, more than 1.2 million children are estimated to be in school, of which 41 percent are girls. About 60,000 others, 21 percent of them girls, are estimated to attend Islamic studies' schools. |
