2015-05-02 |
[GMA News] A pursuit operation against New People's Army militants who ambushed jail personnel led to a clash in Surigao del Sur. The Philippine Army's 4th Infantry Division said the encounter happened in Marihatag town early Thursday morning. Security forces were conducting the pursuit when they were fired upon by around nine suspected NPA militants from the Guerilla Front Committee 19B of the North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee. The clash lasted for 15 minutes and the NPA members were "forced to leave the area," leaving behind one AK-47 with ammunition, materials to make an improvised explosive device, "subversive documents, and personal belongings." The encounter happened during a joint pursuit operation over an ambush on Monday, when suspected NPA militants rescued two of its detained members. Two jail guards were killed, while three others were reportedly seized as well. |
