[RFE/RL] Large posters featuring Stalin's portrait that were posted in public spaces earlier this week in the Dagestani capital, Makhachkala, have been removed. The appearance of the Stalin posters on April 27 triggered criticism by local bloggers and internet users. Other posters showing Stalin with other Soviet leaders and military commanders remain in the city's public spaces.
In many Russian cities, portraits and banners depicting Stalin's image are being displayed in connection with the 70th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany, which Russia celebrates on May 9.
